What is a sleep cycle, actually?
One cycle is a full pass through the sleep stages: light N1 and N2, deep slow-wave (N3) sleep, and REM. The first cycle of the night is deep-sleep heavy and often shorter; by the fourth or fifth, REM periods run 30–55 minutes and deep sleep nearly disappears. Two practical consequences follow: the number of cycles sets how much deep sleep you get, and the timing of waking sets how you feel about it.
Why is the cycle length adjustable here?
Not because nobody else offers it — calculator.net has exposed cycle length and sleep latency for years — but because there they sit behind a settings disclosure, and a setting nobody opens behaves like a constant. Here the two dials are the interface, and the research literature supports making them dials: cycle length is individually variable, roughly 70–120 minutes, and drifts longer as the night goes on. If your natural cycle runs 80 or 100 minutes, a fixed-90 alarm will wake you mid-cycle on a predictable schedule. Why does cutting the morning cost so much REM?
Because REM loads into the final cycles, a six-cycle night does not contain 20% more REM than a five-cycle one — it can contain 30–40% more. About 90 minutes on average — but published cycle lengths range from roughly 70 to 120 minutes between people, and within one person cycles lengthen across the night: the first may run 70–80 minutes, the last over 100. That is why this calculator treats cycle length as an input, not a constant.
If I go to bed at 11 pm, when should I set my alarm?
With 90-minute cycles and 15 minutes to fall asleep, you're asleep by 11:15 pm — so set it for 6:45 am for 5 cycles, 8:15 am for 6, or 5:15 am for 4. Five cycles is the target for most adults. Switch the tool above to “I'm going to bed at…” to compute this for your own numbers.
What happens inside one sleep cycle?
Each cycle moves through light N1/N2 sleep into deep slow-wave sleep and then REM. Deep sleep concentrates in the first half of the night and builds the body; REM lengthens with each cycle and dominates the final third, which is why cutting sleep short at the morning end removes REM disproportionately — the REM sleep calculator on this site quantifies exactly that.
Do sleep cycle apps actually work?
Phone-based sleep-stage detection is unreliable — a microphone and accelerometer cannot stage sleep the way polysomnography does. The scheduling principle itself is sound and needs no sensor: wake at a cycle boundary, computed from a fixed wake time and an honest cycle length. That is all this tool does, and it does it transparently.
