What is 'sleep age', honestly?
Wearable companies sell sleep age as if it were a lab value. It isn't: the validated biological-age clocks (GrimAge and relatives) run on blood methylation, and no wrist sensor measures sleep stages well enough to derive biology from them. Whatis defensible is simpler — the epidemiology is unambiguous that short, irregular, inefficient sleep tracks with faster health decline. This tool compresses that epidemiology into one number and then, crucially, shows you the four components behind it, because the components are the part you can act on.
How is the number built?
Duration carries the most weight (about 1.5 sleep-age years per hour under your age-banded need), then efficiency, consistency and latency, each capped so no single bad habit can dominate, and the total clamped to ±15 years. Every component is listed on your result card with its own contribution — if the number bothers you, the card tells you exactly which lever to pull first.
What should you do with the number?
A high sleep age is a to-do list, not a verdict. Is sleep age a real scientific measure?
No, and we say so on the result card. Real biological-age clocks exist but need blood or methylation data. “Sleep age” as sold by wearables is marketing on top of correlational data. This version is an open composite — four habits scored against healthy-sleeper norms, with every adjustment shown — a mirror for your habits, not a measurement of your biology.
What makes sleep 'age' faster?
The four inputs here are the usual suspects: chronic short duration (the heaviest weight), long or erratic sleep latency, day-to-day wake-time variability (social jet lag), and low efficiency — time in bed that isn't becoming sleep. Each one independently predicts worse outcomes in cohort studies; combined they are a fair sketch of sleep health.
How do I lower my sleep age?
Cheapest wins first: fix the wake time (consistency costs nothing and moves the number fast), then extend duration toward your age-banded need, then look at efficiency — if you're in bed 8.5 hours but asleep 7, tighten the window rather than extending it.
