What does a chronotype test actually measure?
Not sleep quality, and not insomnia — timing. Chronotype is your circadian preference: when your body would sleep, wake and perform if no alarm or obligation interfered. The questions probe it from several angles (free-day wake times, evening energy, caffeine sensitivity, weekend drift) because any single question is easy to answer aspirationally; the pattern across 16 is much harder to fake to yourself. What the test cannot do is diagnose anything — persistent unrefreshing sleep is a clinical conversation, not a quiz outcome.
How does the scoring work?
Most chronotype tests return a type and ask you to trust it. This one returns the ledger: your result card lists every question, the answer you gave, and the points it added to each animal — so if the wolf score surprises you, you can see exactly which answers built it. A preference questionnaire you can audit is worth more than a "scientific" badge on a black box. The four-animal framing itself comes from Dr Michael Breus's The Power of When (2016); the research instruments it popularises are the MEQ and MCTQ, and the chronotype quiz page covers the background of the model.
What should you do with the result?
Use it as a scheduling input, not a label. Your type sets your natural sleep window — compare it with the one you actually keep, and the gap is your social jet lag. Put demanding work in the peak-focus hours it gives you, respect the caffeine cutoff, and build the evening backwards from your natural bedtime with the wind-down routine planner. What is a chronotype test?

How is this chronotype test scored?
Every answer adds points to one or more of the four types, and the full arithmetic is shown on your result — which answers pushed you toward which animal, point by point. Ties break toward the more specific type (dolphin, then lion, then wolf), because bear is the population-average answer set and a tie with it usually masks a real lean. Same answers always give the same result.
How accurate is a chronotype test?
As a self-report preference measure, it is a useful approximation — nothing more. The research-grade instruments are the Morningness–Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) and the Munich ChronoType Questionnaire (MCTQ), and even those measure preference, not destiny. Treat your result as a testable hypothesis: schedule to it for two weeks and see if mornings get easier.
Should I retake the test?
Retake it if your life changes materially — new job hours, a baby, a move across time zones — or if the first result felt wrong. Chronotype itself drifts with age (strongly evening in the teens, earlier from the mid-20s on), so a result from five years ago is worth checking. The sleep-duration figures come from the National Sleep Foundation's 2015 consensus panel (Hirshkowitz et al., Sleep Health) — 18 experts convened from 12 stakeholder organisations, reviewing 300+ studies. The cycle, REM, jet-lag and wind-down models are built from the primary literature, and every source is listed with its context on the methodology & sources page.

You will also not find an Epworth Sleepiness Scale, a STOP-BANG questionnaire or an AHI estimator here. Those are clinical screening instruments: their scores only mean something in the hands of someone who can act on them, and hosting them on a calculator site is a safety problem, not a feature. We exclude them deliberately.
