How does the direction change the maths?
The calculator reduces your two UTC offsets to the effective shift — the shorter path around the clock. Los Angeles to Tokyo is +17 raw hours, but the body experiences a 7-hour westward delay, which is exactly why that direction feels easier than the 7-hour eastward advance home. Recovery days then follow the asymmetry: zones × 1 day eastward, zones × ⅔ day westward, rounded up. How do you pre-adapt before flying?
For crossings of four-plus zones, shifting your schedule 30–60 minutes a day toward the destination for the final 3–4 nights front-loads real adjustment: each shifted night is partial entrainment you don't have to do on arrival. Why do people get destination light backwards?
Light is a phase shifter, and the direction of the shift depends on when it lands relative to your clock's nadir. Eastward, you owe your clock an advance: bright morning light pays it, evening light cancels the payment. Westward, the signs flip. The common mistake — a bright morning run after landing in Europe from the US, timed at the wrong phase — can push adjustment the wrong way for a day. How long does jet lag last?
The rule of thumb: about one day per time zone crossed travelling eastward, and roughly two-thirds of a day per zone westward. Six zones east (New York to Paris) takes about a week to fully adjust; six zones west, four to five days. The asymmetry is real — the body clock delays more easily than it advances.
Why is flying east worse than flying west?
Your internal clock runs slightly longer than 24 hours, so delaying it (westward travel — longer days) comes more naturally than advancing it (eastward — shorter days). 'West is best, east is beast' is the flight-crew version of the phase-response curve.
Should I shift my schedule before I fly?
For crossings of four or more zones, yes: move bedtime and wake time by 30–60 minutes a day toward the destination for the last few days before departure — earlier for eastward, later for westward. The calculator builds that schedule from your actual bedtime. It won't eliminate jet lag, but it front-loads a day or two of the adjustment while you're still at home.
What about light exposure at the destination?
It is the strongest tool you have, and direction-dependent. Eastward: seek bright morning light, avoid strong late-afternoon light for the first days. Westward: the reverse — evening light helps, early morning light hurts. Getting this backwards (e.g. a morning walk after an eastward red-eye, at the wrong phase) can slow adjustment rather than speed it.
