What are the four chronotypes?
Lions wake early without an alarm, think sharpest before lunch, and are asleep by 10:30 on a free night. Bears track the solar day — the majority of people, and the group the standard workday was accidentally built for. Wolves get a genuine second wind in the evening and pay for 8 am meetings with chronic social jet lag. Dolphins — named for the half-brain sleepers of the sea — are light, easily disrupted sleepers, often high-performing perfectionists whose problem is sleep quality more than timing.
Where does the four-animal model come from?
The animal framework is from clinical psychologist Dr Michael Breus's 2016 book The Power of When. It is a popularisation of the morningness–eveningness dimension that chronobiology has studied since the 1970s, and it is good at exactly one thing: making your own timing memorable. It is not a validated psychometric instrument — that would be the MEQ or MCTQ — and nothing in your result should be read as a clinical finding.
What should you do with your chronotype?
Your chronotype tells you when, not how much — pair it with your age-banded sleep need for the full picture. Then: anchor a fixed wake time, get bright light in the first hour after it (the circadian rhythm calculator builds the full light schedule), and generate a wind-down routine that works backwards from your natural bedtime. Wolves especially: your problem is rarely sleep ability and almost always sleep scheduling.

Is this chronotype quiz really free with no email?
Yes. The result appears instantly on the page — no email, no signup, no paywalled PDF. Your answers are stored only in your own browser so you can retake it later; nothing is sent anywhere. “Chronotype quiz free no email” is a real search people make because the big quizzes gate their results, and we think that is absurd.
What are the four chronotype animals?
The four-type framing comes from Dr Michael Breus's 2016 book The Power of When: lions (early chronotypes, ~15–20% of people), bears (solar-cycle, the majority at ~55%), wolves (evening chronotypes, ~15–20%) and dolphins (light, often anxious sleepers, ~10%). The animal names are a memorable wrapper around the morningness–eveningness spectrum that sleep research has measured for decades.
Is this a scientifically valid test?
It is a preference questionnaire, not a clinical instrument, and we say so on the result card. The research-grade measures of chronotype are the Morningness–Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) and the Munich ChronoType Questionnaire (MCTQ). This quiz gives you a useful, honest approximation of where you sit — treat the result as a starting hypothesis about your timing, not a diagnosis.
Can your chronotype change?
Yes, slowly. Chronotype is partly genetic (PER3 and other clock genes) and partly age: teenagers drift strongly toward evening timing, then the population shifts earlier from the mid-20s, markedly so after 60. What should I do with my result?
Schedule with your biology instead of against it: put demanding focus work in your peak window, exercise in your recommended slot, respect the caffeine cutoff, and build a wind-down routine backwards from your natural bedtime. The wind-down planner on this site will generate one from your result.

The sleep-duration figures come from the National Sleep Foundation's 2015 consensus panel (Hirshkowitz et al., Sleep Health) — 18 experts convened from 12 stakeholder organisations, reviewing 300+ studies. The cycle, REM, jet-lag and wind-down models are built from the primary literature, and every source is listed with its context on the methodology & sources page.

This site is not medically reviewed— no clinician reviews this content, and we would rather say that in plain text than hang a reviewer byline we don't have. These are planning tools built on population averages; for a personal sleep problem, a clinician is the right next step.
You will also not find an Epworth Sleepiness Scale, a STOP-BANG questionnaire or an AHI estimator here. Those are clinical screening instruments: their scores only mean something in the hands of someone who can act on them, and hosting them on a calculator site is a safety problem, not a feature.
