How do you calculate wake up time?
The maths runs forward from your bedtime instead of backward from an alarm. First the latency: you are not asleep when your head hits the pillow, so the clock starts at sleep onset, typically 10–20 minutes after lights-out. Then whole cycles:
wake time = bedtime + time to fall asleep + (cycles × cycle length)
For an 11 pm bedtime with the defaults: 11:00 + 0:15 + 5 × 1:30 = 6:45 am. The timeline above draws exactly that — the lighter lead-in band is your falling-asleep time, the ticks are the cycle boundaries your alarm can use.
Why should the alarm land on a cycle boundary?
Deep slow-wave sleep concentrates in the first half of the night, and waking from it produces sleep inertia — the heavy, groggy half-hour that no coffee fixes quickly. Waking between cycles, when sleep is naturally light, makes the same night feel markedly better. The boundary times drift with your personal cycle length, which is why this calculator exposes it: slide it from the 90-minute default toward 80 or 100 and watch the alarm options move. What if your wake time is already decided?
Most people can't choose their alarm — work chooses it. In that case the bedtime is the variable, and the same engine runs in reverse: put your fixed wake time into the bedtime calculator and it returns the bedtimes that protect your cycles. How do you calculate wake up time from a bedtime?
Add the time it takes you to fall asleep to your bedtime — that is sleep onset — then add whole sleep cycles: wake time = bedtime + sleep latency + (cycles × cycle length). With the defaults, that is bedtime + 15 minutes + (cycles × 90 minutes). Waking at the end of a cycle, rather than mid-cycle in deep sleep, is what makes the alarm feel easy.
Is it better to wake at 6 or sleep 30 more minutes?
If those 30 minutes would leave you waking mid-cycle from deep sleep, waking earlier at the cycle boundary will usually feel better than the extra half hour.
